What is synthwave (and the retro-futurist aesthetic)?
Synthwave is a music and visual style that emerged in the late 2000s as a nostalgic throwback to 1980s film scores, video games and sci-fi. Its look is instantly recognisable: a magenta-to-purple gradient sky, a glowing perspective grid running to the horizon, a low sun, chrome lettering and VHS texture.
The music
Synthwave (also called outrun or retrowave) recreates the feel of 80s film and game soundtracks — gated drums, arpeggiated basslines, warm analog synths. Artists like Kavinsky, Com Truise and the Stranger Things composers brought it to wide audiences.
The visuals
The imagery is as codified as the sound:
- A gradient sky, usually magenta into purple into deep blue.
- A neon wireframe grid in cyan or magenta, running to a vanishing point.
- A large, low sun, often with horizontal scan-line bands.
- Chrome or glass 3D lettering.
- Palm trees, sports cars, VHS grain and tracking lines.
Synthwave vs vaporwave
They overlap but differ in mood. Synthwave is earnest and cinematic — night drives, heroism. Vaporwave is ironic and dreamy — mall muzak, Roman busts, glitch. If it looks like a movie poster, it is probably synthwave; if it looks like a broken screensaver, vaporwave.
Where you have seen it
Game menus, album covers, gym branding, energy-drink cans, and the backdrop of nearly every AI 80s portrait — the grid-and-sunset backdrop is the fastest visual shorthand for the decade.
