The story of 80s big hair
1980s big hair was built with back-combing (teasing) at the roots to create height, chemical perms for all-over curl, and razor-cut feathered layers around the face. The mullet — short front, long back — turned a haircut into a cultural symbol. Hairspray held all of it in place.
Volume as a value
The unofficial motto of 80s hair was "more is usually more" — more height, more texture, more layers, more product. People routinely added several inches of crown height, and the tools to do it were a fine comb and a can of hairspray.
Teasing
Teasing, or back-combing, meant holding a section of hair up and combing it toward the scalp to pack it into a dense interior cushion. Smooth the top layer over that cushion and you have instant volume that lasts all day.
The perm boom
Perms were synonymous with the decade. The chemical curl gave fine, flat hair permanent body and bounce, and salons were busy delivering it to women and men alike.
Feathered layers
Carried over from the 1970s and pushed further, feathered hair used long layers — often razor-cut for wispy ends — shaped away from the face with a round brush and blow-dryer for airy, moving volume.
The mullet
"Business in the front, party in the back." Short and neat at the front and sides, long at the back, the mullet existed before the 80s but became a phenomenon in them.
