80s workout and aerobics fashion
The 80s aerobics boom — Jane Fonda's workout tapes, gym culture, MTV — turned exercise clothing into everyday fashion: high-cut leotards over tights, legwarmers, terry headbands and wristbands, neon and colour-blocking, all worn well outside the studio.
The fitness boom
Home workout tapes — Jane Fonda's especially — plus the spread of gyms and a fitness-obsessed MTV made exercise a mainstream lifestyle. Its uniform followed people out the door.
The kit
- High-cut leotard over footless tights or leggings, often in two clashing neon colours.
- Legwarmers, scrunched at the ankle.
- Terrycloth headband and wristbands.
- A belt cinched over the leotard.
- White high-top trainers and slouch socks.
Why it left the gym
It was comfortable, colourful and read as healthy and energetic — exactly the image the decade wanted. The look is an easy, recognisable costume today, and a favourite for an 80s photo: headband, wristbands, a bright leotard and a confident stance.
